Francesco Saliola

English, Italian

I was born in Rome but grew up in Florence, where I currently live; I am part of the GAE group “Toscana Fuori Sentiero”.

I am interested in various forms of outdoor activities, from classic day hikes to multi-day trekking, from bushcraft to nature observation, convinced that there is always something to learn and that sharing knowledge with others is both beautiful and rewarding. I have explored so-called “survival” techniques—a misleading term that I don’t like—with an approach based first and foremost on ethno-anthropological knowledge.

I have developed specific skills in cartography and orientation, and I have contributed to the design and implementation of hiking networks and walking routes in Tuscany.

Among the topics that fascinate me most are the human–environment relationship over the millennia and the ancient routes that humanity has traveled through different eras—subjects I explored starting from my university studies in prehistoric ecology and Paleolithic archaeology.

Other experiences:

Short courses in which I taught the basics of cartography and orientation, as well as the use of GNSS devices (GPS receivers, smartphones with “land navigation” apps, etc.) to beginners and hikers who wanted to deepen their knowledge.

Theoretical and practical workshops in which I introduced basic bushcraft techniques (identifying, collecting, and purifying water; lighting fires using ancient methods and natural resources) and survival techniques (signaling one’s position, requesting help in case of danger, etc.).

I am the author of the book Camminare ultraleggeri.

Ultralight equipment and techniques for hikers and walkers (Società Editrice Fiorentina, 2019).
